(I think most non-speakers of Cantonese get the majority of their exposure to the language through old ladies shouting at the market in Chinatown or to each other on the train over the screeching of the tracks.
To be clear, Cantonese is by no means a pretty language. But it’s very down-to-earth. And it’s very clever, if that makes sense. It will never sound romantic to me, but at the same time, I think it can be very poetic. And in situations like the one in this short, I think it really resonates.)
